Guwahati, 17th March: Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has issued a strong warning to the party leadership, stating he may resign if Lahorighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar is renominated for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

In a sharply worded letter to Jitendra Singh, Bordoloi expressed “pain and anguish” over what he described as the party’s failure to act on serious allegations linked to Nazar.

The Nagaon MP referred to a suo motu probe by Assam Police that led to the arrest and charge-sheeting of Emdadul Islam, whom he identified as a close associate of Nazar. Bordoloi alleged that Islam was involved in a violent attack on him and his associate Sibamoni Bora in April 2025 at Dumdumia in Dhing, where a group of around 20 armed individuals allegedly assaulted them.

He further claimed that after securing bail, the accused received a “hero’s welcome,” allegedly organised by Nazar. Bordoloi also alleged that Islam later attended events linked to senior Congress leaders, including being present at a programme associated with Gaurav Gogoi in January 2026.

Bordoloi said he had raised objections to Nazar’s renomination during a screening committee meeting chaired by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. However, he alleged that during the Central Election Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 13, his claims were dismissed as “false and fabricated” by committee member Imran Masood.

Expressing disappointment, Bordoloi noted that Gogoi remained silent during the deliberations. He added that he has resubmitted evidence to the party’s central leadership and warned of stepping down if the issue is not addressed. “I will continue to fight to protect my dignity within the party,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Nazar has also been in the spotlight recently after being arrested along with three other Congress members by Dispur Police in Guwahati over allegations of transporting printed leaflets targeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Senior Congress leader Mira Borthakur defended Nazar, terming the police action unjustified and assuring legal support to the arrested party workers.

The episode has brought internal divisions within the Assam Congress into the open at a crucial juncture, with Bordoloi’s warning adding pressure on the leadership over candidate selection ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
