Nagpur: Maharashtra Police have arrested Faheem Shamim Khan, identified as the mastermind behind the recent communal violence in Nagpur’s Mahal area. The incident, which occurred on March 17, involved stone-pelting, arson, and left 34 police personnel injured. The arrest has shed light on Khan’s political connections, adding a new dimension to the investigation.
Faheem Khan, 38, is the city president of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP) and had contested the 2024 elections against Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Police reports suggest that Khan orchestrated the violence, mobilizing a group of 50-60 people to incite unrest. Footage surfaced showing him allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches moments before the violence erupted.
Initially, the unrest was believed to be linked to tensions surrounding Aurangzeb’s tomb. However, Nagpur Police Commissioner clarified that the violence was triggered by the burning of a photograph, escalating rapidly into chaos. The police have also charged Khan with assaulting a female officer during the clashes.
Khan was presented before the court on Wednesday, which remanded him to police custody until March 21. Investigations revealed that Khan meticulously planned the riot, scripting the sequence of stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson. His name has been added to the FIR registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station.
The violence, which unfolded near the RSS headquarters, prompted Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to direct the police to take strict action. In response, curfew orders remain in effect across several police station areas to prevent further escalation.
As the investigation continues, Khan’s political background and alleged role in orchestrating the violence have intensified the political discourse surrounding the incident. Authorities are now delving deeper into the planning and motives behind the unrest, aiming to bring all perpetrators to justice.
