New Delhi, 16th Aug: President Droupadi Murmu appointed Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to discharge the functions of the Governor of Nagaland, following the demise of the late incumbent, La. Ganesan.
The appointment was announced through an official communique from the President’s office on Saturday.
La. Ganesan, an 80-year-old veteran politician and former Rajya Sabha member, passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. He had been serving as the Governor of Nagaland since February 2023 and was known for his long career dedicated to public service. His death created a sudden vacancy at the Raj Bhavan in Kohima.
The appointment of Bhalla, a retired bureaucrat and former Union Home Secretary, to hold the additional charge is in line with Article 153 of the Constitution, which allows one person to be appointed as the Governor for two or more states. Bhalla assumed office as the Governor of Manipur in January 2025.
