Imphal, 10th Oct: The Manipur government on Friday banned two cough syrup brands after they were found to contain a highly toxic chemical.
The Drugs Control Department has prohibited the sale and consumption of “Relife” and “Resipfresh TR”, both manufactured in Gujarat, and directed all retailers, distributors, and pharmacies to immediately withdraw the affected batches and report compliance.
A statement from the Drugs Control Administration under the Directorate of Health Services warned consumers, healthcare providers, and retailers against using these products. Laboratory tests conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Government Drug Testing Laboratory confirmed that the syrups were adulterated with diethylene glycol, a toxic industrial solvent that can cause acute poisoning, kidney failure, and even death.
The state has intensified surveillance across medical shops and hospitals to prevent further distribution. Healthcare providers have also been advised to monitor for symptoms of diethylene glycol poisoning in patients who may have consumed the syrups.
