New Delhi, 13th March. The INDIA coalition that had once attempted to emerge as a formidable alternative has collapsed from Kolkata to Mumbai. The alliance has been put to the test from Kerala to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. The TMC has dashed the alliance’s hopes in West Bengal by revealing the names of candidates for each of the 42 seats. With the slogan “Ekla Chalo,” Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has set up her electoral chessboard for the Lok Sabha. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s journey is not simple, though.
There are a number of reasons why the Trinamool Congress and Congress in West Bengal are not forming an alliance, but Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, the Congress leader’s rhetoric is the primary one. Since 2023, Adhir Ranjan has been assaulting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nonstop. Adhir did not stay silent when Mamata Banerjee brought up the issue of not making statements among themselves at the Indi alliance’s inaugural meeting in Patna. Adhir Ranjan Choudhary was reportedly not prepared for an alliance with the Trinamool Congress, according to a top state Congress official. Adhir had previously declared he would not run in the elections in the event the party teamed up with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Maybe for that reason, Mamata Banerjee gave cricketer Yusuf Pathan a ticket from the Baharampur seat so he could corner Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary.
Mamata was also upset that she had not received an invitation to the Nyaya Yatra
In addition, Mamata Banerjee was upset about the seat-sharing delay and her failure to receive the invitation for the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra. The Chief Minister claimed that she was not informed about the Nyaya Yatra, even out of politeness, just one day before it entered West Bengal. Congress clarified, nevertheless, that the President of the party had sent a letter to each member of the alliance. Nevertheless, the two of them split up after the candidates for every seat were announced.
Mamta’s path is not an easy one
A direct contest between the BJP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is difficult to win. Congress strategists predict that Mamata Banerjee will suffer a political setback as a result of Ekla Chalo’s decision. On the Sandesh Khali issue, the BJP is already taking a strong stance. Separate elections will result in a division of anti-BJP votes in such a scenario, which will benefit the BJP. Congress continues to be lenient toward Trinamool because of this.
Voter percentage did not change much
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was little difference in the percentage of votes cast for the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. With 40% of the vote, the BJP won 18 seats, while Trinamool won 22. In 2014, the BJP secured two seats with a mere 17% of the vote at the same time. Congress has also managed to hold onto roughly 8% of the vote in these elections. Many BJP seats could be in jeopardy in such a scenario, should the INDI alliance proceed.
What did Jairam Ramesh say?
While revealing the nominees for each of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s seats, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the party has always desired a respectful seat-sharing arrangement with Trinamool. Although we are always available for discussions, there shouldn’t have been a unilateral announcement of candidates. What pressure was placed on Trinamool is unknown to him. From a Congress perspective, our goal is to fortify the INDI alliance in West Bengal. It is now up to the party to decide on a plan.
