Kolkata, 11th Dec: Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a fierce attack on the BJP over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, urging women to resist any attempt to delete their names during the review process.
Speaking at a rally in Krishnagar, Banerjee alleged that the SIR exercise was being misused to target voters. She warned that women must be ready to fight back if their voting rights are undermined, saying they should not allow any interference in their democratic entitlement.
Banerjee accused the BJP of attempting to intimidate voters by deploying forces from outside the state during elections. She also targeted the party over public religious events, questioning the motive behind mass Gita recitations and asserting that true faith resides in the heart, not in political displays.
Invoking Bengal’s cultural icons — including Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Rabindranath Tagore and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose — Banerjee said these leaders never divided people, and accused the BJP of doing the opposite.
She reiterated her stance on personal freedoms, stating that food choices and cultural practices cannot be dictated by political forces. Warning the BJP not to underestimate Bengal, she said “an injured tiger is more ferocious” and vowed to resist any injustice or manipulation of the electoral process.
Banerjee alleged that the BJP intends to hold elections based on lists prepared by its IT cell, warning that Bengal will not accept such interference. She also cautioned citizens in border areas to stay away from BSF posts, asserting that her government will not allow forced displacement of residents from the state.
