Kolkata, 11th Feb. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday declared that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will contest the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections independently, without any alliance with the Congress or any other party.
Addressing party legislators before the budget session of the West Bengal Assembly, Banerjee asserted, “Congress has nothing in West Bengal. So there is no question of an alliance. Trinamool Congress will contest alone and form the government for the fourth time in 2026 with a two-thirds majority.”
According to a senior state cabinet member, Banerjee blamed the Congress for the opposition’s failure in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, where the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats. She criticized the Congress for not supporting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, and similarly, AAP for not backing Congress in Haryana, leading to BJP’s victory in both states.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister also reprimanded some party legislators for public statements that had embarrassed the party leadership. She issued a strong warning, stating that repeated mistakes would not be pardoned.
Banerjee further addressed reports of internal conflicts within the party, particularly in Malda and West Burdwan districts, urging legislators to resolve disputes to maintain unity ahead of the 2026 elections.
The announcement signals TMC’s firm stance on contesting the elections solo, reinforcing its dominance in Bengal politics while dismissing any prospects of an opposition alliance.
