New Delhi, 14th Jan. The Malé mayoral elections were won on Saturday (Jan 13) by Adam Azim, the candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives, who left office less than two months after taking office, is severely hurt by the election results.

MDP chief Abdulla Shahid wrote on X, saying, “Congrats to Adam Azim and the MDP Secretariat for winning the Malé Mayoral by-election! After 58 days in office, the nation’s capital has firmly rejected President Muizzu and his policies.

In the by-election, 55 polling places were open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. As per the Election Commission, just 17,000 of the 54,680 eligible voters participated in the by-election.

Previously, Azim oversaw the State Trading Organisation (STO) and the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), among other state-run businesses.

In addition to the mayoralty, candidates will be chosen to fill the three open seats on the Malé City Council—Maafannu South, Central Henveiru, and Henveiru South—that resulted from their resignation to join the new administration.
