Madras HC Upholds NIA’s Order Freezing Medical Student’s Tuition Fee

GG News Bureau
Chennai, 10th Dec. The Madras High Court has declined to interfere with the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) decision to freeze the tuition fee paid for a medical student studying at a private college in Chennai. The NIA alleged that the tuition fee was funded by a Maoist organization based in Jharkhand.

A division bench comprising Justices S M Subramaniam and M Jyothiraman dismissed the petition filed by the student challenging the NIA’s order.

During the hearing, the student’s counsel argued that the college was withholding her certificates due to the frozen fee and that she had been summoned by the NIA in connection with the matter.

The bench, however, rejected these submissions, stating it could not intervene in the NIA’s decision. The court suggested the student appear before the NIA, provide an explanation, and request the defreezing of the tuition fee.

The bench further questioned the potential risks, asking, “What guarantee is there that a student performing well in studies will not join an extremist group?”
