Madhya Pradesh Political Faceoff: Former CMs Clash in Lok Sabha Elections

Bhopal, 4th April.
In a rare electoral showdown, Madhya Pradesh witnesses two former Chief Ministers vying for Lok Sabha seats, marking a significant political spectacle after 26 years.

With Congress nominating former CM Digvijay Singh from the Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency and BJP fielding former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Vidisha, the electoral battle intensifies.

Voting in these constituencies is slated for the third phase on May 7.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, contesting from the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat, boasts a political tenure of over 17 years, having served as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for four terms.

Similarly, Digvijay Singh, with two terms as Madhya Pradesh CM and a decade-long political stewardship, is a prominent figure in state politics.

The electoral contest harks back to the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, where both former CMs faced defeat. Sundarlal Patwa, BJP’s former CM, contested against Kamal Nath in Chhindwara, while Arjun Singh, another former CM, vied against BJP’s SarTaj Singh in Hoshangabad, both suffering electoral setbacks.

Interestingly, initial reluctance marked the readiness of both Digvijay Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan to contest the elections.
BJP’s seasoned leader competes from the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat, where any candidate from the party is considered a strong contender.

Questions arose regarding BJP’s choice to field Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the party’s most popular face in the state. Speculations also pondered over whether Congress would present a prominent candidate against Kamal Nath in his bastion of Chhindwara.
