New Delhi, 20th Aug: The Lok Sabha was plunged into chaos on Wednesday as the Union government introduced three bills for the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or ministers if they are arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges.
The moment Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the legislations, Opposition members tore up copies of the bills, trooped into the well of the House, and began shouting slogans. Despite the protests, Shah assured that the bills would be sent to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further review. “We cannot be so shameless that we continue to occupy constitutional positions while facing serious charges,” he said.
The three bills—the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025—mandate that any of the mentioned officeholders would lose their job on the 31st day if detained for 30 consecutive days for an offense with a jail term of at least five years.
The Opposition described the bills as “draconian,” “unconstitutional,” and an attempt to turn the country into a “police state.” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that the law could be used to put any kind of case on a Chief Minister and remove them without conviction. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also spoke against the bills, while TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee condemned the government’s “authoritarian attitude.”
The continuous protests led to the adjournment of the House multiple times throughout the day.
