Thiruvananthapuram, 2nd Nov: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan virtually addressed the International Conference on “Libraries Empowering Communities – Global Perspectives” organised by the P. N. Panicker Foundation at Kanakakkunnu Palace, Thiruvananthapuram, today.

Marking the 80th anniversary of Kerala’s organised library movement inspired by Shri P. N. Panicker — regarded as the pioneer of India’s library and literacy movement — the Vice-President lauded the Foundation’s efforts to promote reading culture, digital literacy, and community empowerment. He said the Foundation’s motto, “Vayichu Valaruka” (Read and Grow), continues to inspire society toward enlightenment and inclusion.

Calling libraries “temples of learning,” Shri Radhakrishnan described them as spaces that nurture critical thinking, foster inclusion, and empower individuals and communities. He said Bharat has been a land of knowledge since time immemorial, noting that from the ancient epics to modern knowledge systems, India’s civilizational ethos of learning continues to guide its social and intellectual growth.

Highlighting the challenges of the digital era, the Vice-President said that while technology allows easy access to information, libraries act as trusted guides, ensuring access to authentic knowledge and countering misinformation. “In the digital age, libraries are not relics of the past — they are dynamic hubs that cultivate reflection and meaningful dialogue,” he remarked.

Praising Kerala’s exceptional legacy in literacy and education, the Vice-President paid rich tributes to Shri P. N. Panicker, whose vision transformed libraries into vibrant community centres. He called for expanding India’s network of public and community libraries, emphasising their role in nation-building through knowledge and inclusion.

The International Conference, held from November 2–3, brings together global experts, policymakers, academicians, and library professionals to discuss the evolving role of libraries in the digital age. It also celebrates Kerala’s enduring library movement and explores strategies for digital access, sustainable knowledge ecosystems, and enhanced community participation.
