Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 16th Sept. Supreme Court Judge Sanjiv Khanna on Monday highlighted the growing opportunities for lawyers, urging them to study emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), proportionality, and data analysis.

Speaking at the third convocation of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) in Aurangabad, he emphasized that these areas are crucial for the evolving legal profession.

With over 5.5 crore cases pending in Indian courts, including 83,000 in the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna pointed to the increasing need for legal professionals. “Around 1 lakh advocates are enrolled every year, and the demand for lawyers to argue cases, serve as judges, and man tribunals is huge,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of interdisciplinary study in law, particularly in technology-driven areas, stating that law must evolve with legislative and judicial policy changes.

Justice Khanna further emphasized the significance of maintaining ethics and integrity in the legal profession, noting, “Law is not a business; it demands responsibility, honor, and dignity.”

Addressing the need for mediation and legal aid, he said that 80% of India’s population qualifies for legal aid, and young advocates can make a substantial impact in this area.

Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka, Justice UB Bhuyan, and Vice Chancellor A Lakshmikanth were also present as students were conferred LLB and LLM degrees during the ceremony.
