New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, 27th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lauded the remarkable transformation of Odisha’s railway infrastructure over the past 11 years, describing the period as “truly historic” for the eastern state. His remarks came in response to an article by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, which highlights the government’s efforts in easing railway travel, particularly for pilgrims heading to Jagannath Puri for the annual Rath Yatra.
In a post shared via the PMO India handle on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said:
“The last 11 years have been truly historic for the development of Odisha’s railway infrastructure. Union Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw writes about how Bhartiya Rail travel has been eased, especially for pilgrims to the holy city of Jagannath Puri, the abode of Mahaprabhu, to witness the Rath Yatra.”
The article referenced by the Prime Minister, titled “Pilgrims’ Progress: The Railways’ Look East Policy”, outlines key reforms and investments that have expanded connectivity and enhanced passenger comfort, with a special focus on boosting spiritual tourism in the region.
Rail Infrastructure for Religious and Regional Growth
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who also hails from Odisha, detailed in the article how the Indian Railways’ “Look East” policy has placed Eastern India, especially Odisha, at the centre of the national infrastructure agenda. Modernised stations, improved frequency of trains, and increased rail access to remote districts have significantly reduced travel time for pilgrims, particularly those visiting Jagannath Dham.
The Rath Yatra in Puri, a key annual event, draws lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad. In recent years, special trains and upgraded platforms have been arranged to manage the influx smoothly.
A Decade of Transformation
Odisha has witnessed a major expansion of track lines, electrification, and the introduction of Vande Bharat trains, enhancing both speed and safety. The PM’s remarks reinforce the government’s continued push toward equitable infrastructure development across states, with Odisha benefiting from targeted policies and high-level attention.
