Landslide in Sumgarh village of district Bageshwar results in 3 deaths

Pithoragarh/Bageshwar, 11th July. A husband and wife and their eight-year-old child were reported buried dead due to the landslide triggered due to heavy rains in Sumangarh Village in Kapkot tehsil of Bageshwar district, on Sunday.
A team of police, SDRF and doctors rushed to the spot as soon as the incident was reported. The team had difficulty in reaching the village as the road was blocked up to eight kilometers to the village resulting in the delay in relif work.
Heavy rain and hailstorm lashed the district in the early hours of Sunday. The worst damage caused by the rains has been in Kapkot block. A house in Itavan Tok in Sumgarh village of Kapkot block was hit by a landslide. Three persons living in the house Govind Singh Panda son of Pratap Singh, Khashti Devi wife of Govind Singh and their eight-year-old son Himanshu were buried in the debris. The family members did not even get a chance to escape as it the incident occurred around 3 am when they were fast asleep.
The search relief operations are facing difficulties due to closure of roads from at several places. The SDRF team is said to have reached the spot.
SDM Kapkot Pramod Kumar said that relief team is on the spot.
Meanwhile rains lashed Rain continued to lash all parts of the district. The Saryu, Gomti river are in spate due to rain. Police have also issued an alert to people living on the riverbanks. Superintendent of Police Amit Srivastava said The Jal Police has also been deployed and people living in coastal areas are also being asked to exercise vigil.
Kapkot block chief Govind Danu said three persons belong to the same family and the risk of more such slides in the area has instilled fear among the residents.
