New Delhi, 5th March: Kavinder Gupta on Thursday resigned from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, just about nine months after assuming office.
Gupta had taken oath as the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory on July 18 last year.
Sources indicated that the move comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party likely to assign him an important role in the party’s campaign in the state.
Gupta’s tenure in Ladakh coincided with rising political unrest in the region.
Civil society groups and organisations including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance had been staging protests demanding statehood, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, and job reservations for locals.
In September 2025, protests in the region escalated, leading to police firing in which four youths were killed.
Attempts to contact Gupta for comments on his resignation were unsuccessful.
Officials have not yet announced who will take charge as the next Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
