Ladakh Clamps Internet After Sonam Wangchuk’s Arrest

Leh, 26th Sept: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by police on Friday and charged under the National Security Act (NSA), according to government sources. The NSA allows for long preventive detention without bail, and Wangchuk is expected to be moved out of Ladakh soon.

Following his arrest, internet services in Leh have been suspended.

The arrest comes two days after violent protests by supporters of the movement for Ladakh statehood and Sixth Schedule extension, which resulted in four deaths and 90 injuries.

Wangchuk had launched a fast on September 10, demanding Sixth Schedule inclusion, statehood, and protection of Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem, but ended the fast on September 24 as unrest escalated in the town.

In response to his arrest, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is organising a candlelight vigil at Jantar Mantar at 7:00 pm. Saurabh Bhardwaj, AAP Delhi State President, will participate in the demonstration.
