Kulgam, 7th Aug: Amidst an ongoing anti-terror operation that has entered its seventh day, locals from Akhal village in Kulgam have called for their relocation, citing severe hardships and fear. The residents claim they are unable to sleep due to the relentless firing and are now running low on food and other essential supplies.

Mubarak Khanday, a villager living close to the encounter site, said, “We have been facing severe difficulties for the past seven days. Firing and bombs go on during the night. There is a shortage of ration in our homes now.” He added that women and children are terrified and have developed “psychological problems” from the continuous noise of explosions.

Sheikh Mehboob, a village official, also appealed to the government for help, stating, “We are facing a shortage of water and medicines. We request that the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department arrange water for us.” He thanked the deputy commissioner and the SSP for arranging an ambulance for the locals, acknowledging the security forces for their work while also highlighting the problems caused by the prolonged operation.

The counter-terror operations, launched in the forests of the Akhal area on August 1 following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists, have become the longest such operation in the Kashmir valley this year. So far, two terrorists have been killed and at least nine security personnel have sustained injuries, according to reports. Security forces are utilizing technical surveillance gadgets, including drones and helicopters, to track down the hiding terrorists.
