Kolkata, 24th Sept: A night of torrential rain left large parts of Kolkata under water on Monday, killing at least seven people by electrocution and paralysing public life, while triggering a fierce political slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The city recorded nearly 300 mm of rain in a rare cloudburst, submerging major neighbourhoods and Durga Puja pandals days before the festival.
BJP Blames TMC
The BJP’s Bengal unit posted pictures and videos of inundated areas such as Maniktala and Science City, alleging corruption and civic neglect.
“Years of anarchy under CPI(M) and nearly 15 years of TMC corruption have forced Bengalis to suffer even during their biggest festival,” one post said, questioning how businesses could invest in such conditions.
TMC Hits Back
State Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya countered that the deluge was “nature’s wrath,” accusing the BJP of “weaponising pain to spread hate” and ignoring the climate crisis.
“Scientists have said no city escapes when the skies open without pause,” she wrote, comparing the event to Mumbai 2005 and Chennai 2015.
Women and Child Development Minister Sashi Panja said officials were “working relentlessly on the streets,” adding, “Amid calamity, leadership is measured in compassion and action. BJP offers neither.”
Adhikari Targets Civic Bodies
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari held the Kolkata and Bidhannagar civic bodies and the state power department responsible for “criminal negligence,” demanding accountability for the deaths caused by live wires.
