Kolkata, 7th Aug: Nearly a year after their daughter was raped and murdered at a Kolkata medical college, her parents have arrived in Delhi to meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood. The parents have expressed their frustration over what they call a stalled investigation, even after the conviction of a single individual.
The body of the young doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court. However, the parents believe a larger conspiracy is at play and that more people were involved.
“We came here today with the hope that the CBI will answer our questions, but they’ve closed the case instead,” the victim’s visibly devastated father told NDTV. “The CBI is spineless. None of our demands were heard. We believe there were more people involved, and they need to be brought to justice.”
The mother, holding placards demanding justice, tearfully echoed his sentiments, stating, “I refuse to believe that in a government medical college and hospital, an individual can just walk in, commit the crimes and walk out easily. My daughter is dead. We are also the living dead.”
The case was taken up suo moto by the Supreme Court last year, with Justice J.B. Pardiwala remarking that he had “not come across a case like this in the last 30 years.”
The parents plan to return to Kolkata on Saturday to lead a march to the state secretariat. They have invited leaders and workers of all political parties to join the protest, except for those from the ruling Trinamool Congress, on the condition that they do not carry party flags.
