Surrey (Canada), 10th July: Comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly opened café in Canada, “Kap’s Café,” was targeted in a shooting incident late Wednesday night, with at least nine bullets fired at the establishment. Khalistani terrorist Harjit Singh Laddi, wanted by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), has claimed responsibility for the attack. No injuries have been reported.
The shooting occurred in Surrey, British Columbia, where Sharma recently launched his first café venture with wife Ginni Chatrath. CCTV footage shows a man in a car firing repeatedly at the café’s window before fleeing. Police and forensic teams swiftly reached the site and have launched a full investigation.
Laddi, associated with Babbar Khalsa International, is among the NIA’s most wanted. He is also accused of orchestrating the April 2024 assassination of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Vikas Prabhakar in Punjab. According to initial reports, Laddi allegedly ordered the attack on Sharma’s café over an old remark made by the comedian, which he deemed offensive.
Canadian authorities have not commented on the motive but are investigating all angles, including terrorism links.
The incident has again spotlighted Canada’s ongoing struggle with Khalistani extremism. A recent Canadian Security Intelligence Service report admitted that Khalistani elements continue to use the country as a base for fundraising and planning violence in India.
India has consistently raised concerns over Canada’s handling of Khalistani terrorists. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had previously criticized the Canadian government’s reluctance to act, citing misuse of “free speech” provisions to justify extremist propaganda.
Tensions between India and Canada have slightly eased under new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, after relations soured under Justin Trudeau following his allegations in 2023 regarding Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
