Kochi, 11th June: The Kerala High Court has issued summons to AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following a plea that challenges her election from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. The bypoll for this constituency took place last year.
Justice K. Babu issued the order after accepting a petition filed by Navya Haridas, the BJP candidate who ran against Vadra. Haridas claims that the Congress leader did not accurately reveal her and her family’s assets in her nomination papers. She alleges this amounts to “false information,” which violates the Model Code of Conduct and is a corrupt practice.
Haridas, who lost to Vadra by over five lakh votes in the November 13, 2024 bypoll, confirmed that Vadra’s response has been sought by the court. The next hearing for the petition is set for August 11.
The BJP leader’s plea specifically asks the court to overturn Ms. Vadra’s election. It alleges she “suppressed vital information about the various assets owned by her and her family” and “misguided, misinformed and kept the voters in the dark with the intention of influencing their choice.”
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured her first electoral victory from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in that 2024 bypoll, receiving 6,22,338 votes. Her rival, Navya Haridas, finished third with 1,09,939 votes.
