Bengaluru, 2nd September. The chief pontiff of the Karnataka’s Murugha Mutt, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, was arrested last night after a FIR under the POCSO Act was filed against him.
Six days after a FIR was filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act accusing Shivamurthy of sexually assaulting minors, he was taken into custody.
He is accused of sexually assaulting two minor high school girls in his monastery’s Chitradurga district hostel.
Shivamurthy was taken to the district hospital for a medical examination before being arrested, according to police.
He appeared in court late last night and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. He was then taken to the Chitradurga district jail.
