Bengaluru, 30th March: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Monday announced that every MLA in the state will be allotted three tickets for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, following discussions with cricket authorities and stakeholders.
The decision comes after Karnataka Assembly Speaker UT Khader raised concerns over alleged “disrespect” faced by legislators at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is managed by the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
Shivakumar said the allocation was finalised after meetings with KSCA officials, representatives of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and event organisers.
“They have agreed to provide three tickets for IPL games. If any MLA does not want them, they can inform the Speaker,” he said, adding that the decision is optional and not mandatory.
In addition, legislators will receive two tickets for international matches held at the stadium, with the option to purchase two more if required.
The move has drawn criticism from opposition leaders. BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar termed the allocation “VIP culture” and said he would not accept the tickets.
Defending the decision, Shivakumar said he had consulted officials in states like Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Gujarat, claiming that a large share of tickets in those regions is reserved for government representatives.
“In Karnataka, interference is comparatively less,” he said.
The development comes as IPL 2026 begins in Bengaluru, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru playing the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
