New Delhi, 28th Jan: Kaiserganj Member of Parliament Karan Bhushan Singh has sought to distance himself from the controversial UGC Act 2026 rules, stating that the parliamentary standing committee of which he is a member had no role in drafting the new regulations.
Amid growing political backlash and protests in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP MP said that misinformation was being spread against him through social media platforms and television channels, wrongly linking him to the formulation of the disputed rules.
“I want to clearly state that the standing committee of Parliament, of which I am a member, had no contribution in framing these UGC rules,” Karan Bhushan said in a post on X.
Emphasising his alignment with public concerns, the MP said that his sentiments were with society at large and that the UGC must take note of the widespread unease over the new framework.
“My feelings are with the people of our society. I demand that UGC should reconsider these rules, respect public sentiment and bring necessary improvements so that caste-based discrimination does not spread,” he said.
Karan Bhushan also warned that educational institutions must not be allowed to turn into arenas of social conflict. “We will not allow our educational institutions to become centres of caste-based conflict. Our objective is to take everyone along and preserve social harmony,” he said.
The clarification from the MP comes as the UGC Act 2026 continues to face resistance from political leaders, legal experts and student groups, who argue that certain provisions could deepen social divisions and disturb campus harmony.
