Kanpur, 12th Feb: Shivam Mishra, son of Uttar Pradesh tobacco businessman K.K. Mishra and the main accused in the Kanpur Lamborghini crash case, was arrested on Thursday morning and produced before a court after a medical examination, police officials said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kanpur Central) A.K. Srivastava said the accused was taken into custody after police received inputs about his presence in the city. “We got information he is in Kanpur. Five teams were formed and we arrested him. He has been presented in court,” the officer said.
The arrest came four days after a Lamborghini Revuelto, reportedly speeding on Kanpur’s VIP Road on Sunday afternoon, lost control and crashed into pedestrians and several vehicles, including two-wheelers and an e-rickshaw. Six people were injured in the incident.
According to preliminary reports, the luxury car first hit the rickshaw, then crashed into a parked Royal Enfield motorcycle, flinging the rider nearly 10 feet away. The vehicle then dragged the bike for some distance before hitting an electric pole and stopping.
Eyewitnesses alleged that private security personnel accompanying Shivam Mishra tried to disperse the crowd and move him away from the spot before authorities arrived. The black Lamborghini, bearing a Delhi registration, was seized and sent for inspection.
Police said the initial investigation established that Mishra was driving the vehicle. He was booked on charges of rash and negligent driving, endangering lives, and causing hurt by dangerous means.
On Wednesday, a man identifying himself as Mohan appeared before a Kanpur court claiming he had been driving the car. He alleged that Mishra suffered a seizure just before the crash, causing him to lose control. Mishra’s family supported this claim, stating he suffers from epilepsy.
However, police said video evidence showed Mishra being pulled out from the driver’s seat after the accident. The court declined to accept Mohan’s surrender, noting the police findings.
The case has also triggered allegations of police leniency due to the family’s wealth and influence. The first FIR named unknown persons, and Mishra’s name was added later. The officer in charge of the local police station, Santosh Kumar Gaur, was suspended for procedural lapses after the crash.
Shivam Mishra is the son of K.K. Mishra, owner of Banshidhar Exports Pvt Ltd. The family had earlier come under the Income Tax Department’s scrutiny in March 2024, when searches at multiple premises in Delhi and Kanpur reportedly uncovered luxury cars and around ₹4.5 crore in cash. Several high-end vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Porsche, and the Lamborghini involved in the crash, were found bearing the same registration number.
