Bengaluru, 2nd June: The controversy sparked by legendary actor Kamal Haasan’s statement that “Kannada was born out of Tamil” continues to escalate, with the actor now seeking relief from the Karnataka High Court. The move comes after the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) warned that if Haasan does not apologise, his upcoming film Thug Life would not be released in the state.

M Narasimhalu, president of KFCC, stated, “If he doesn’t apologise, Thug Life won’t run in Karnataka. This is about the state, not just the industry. Political parties and pro-Kannada groups have made it clear that he must respond. Exhibitors and distributors are unwilling to screen the film without an apology.”

The controversy erupted during a promotional event for Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, and Silambarasan TR, when Haasan made the remark about Kannada’s origins. The comment drew sharp criticism across party lines.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended Kannada’s rich history, saying Haasan “doesn’t know about it.” BJP Karnataka chief BY Vijayendra demanded an apology, accusing the actor of “blatant arrogance” and calling respect for all languages essential for artists.

Despite the backlash, Kamal Haasan remains firm, stating, “It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is true. I will apologise if proven wrong; otherwise, I won’t.”

The film’s release in Karnataka hangs in the balance as the dispute unfolds in court and among the state’s political and cultural groups.
