Guwahati, 29th Oct: A court in Guwahati has extended the judicial custody of the five main accused in the case related to the death of singer-composer Zubeen Garg by another 14 days.
The accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya — appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court via video conferencing from the Baksa district jail. None of the accused have applied for bail so far.
The court had earlier sent them to judicial custody on October 15, after which they were lodged in Baksa jail under tight security due to protests that broke out in the area. Two other individuals — Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, both members of Garg’s band — were sent to judicial custody a day later and shifted to Haflong prison in Dima Hasao district.
Garg tragically drowned during a yacht party in Singapore on September 19. Investigators have already recorded the statements of nine out of the eleven people who had accompanied him on the trip. Another witness is expected to arrive in Guwahati for questioning soon.
Siddharth Sharma, the singer’s manager, and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta — who arranged the Singapore event — have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Authorities are also probing financial irregularities, including suspicious transactions exceeding ₹1.1 crore in the accounts of Garg’s personal security officers.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to gather financial and circumstantial evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
