New Delhi,19th June: A three-member panel of senior judges has recommended the initiation of removal proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, after an inquiry into a fire incident at his official residence in Delhi revealed a startling recovery of large quantities of burnt and partially burnt currency notes.
According to reports accessed by NDTV, the panel concluded that there is sufficient evidence to warrant Justice Varma’s removal from office.
The fire occurred late on the night of March 14, around 11:35 PM, at 30 Tughlak Crescent, then the government-allotted residence of Justice Varma during his tenure with the Delhi High Court. The accidental blaze led to the unearthing of suspicious cash bundles, triggering a high-level probe.
The panel’s findings have reportedly been submitted to the relevant constitutional authorities. If approved, the removal process—requiring presidential assent and passage by both Houses of Parliament—could be initiated under Article 124(4) of the Constitution.
The judiciary and central agencies have remained tight-lipped on the ongoing investigation, but the revelation has sent shockwaves through the legal and political community, raising serious concerns about judicial accountability and corruption.
Further details on the origins of the cash and its potential links to criminal or financial misconduct are yet to be officially disclosed.
