New Delhi, 12th April. The Ministry of Education (MoE) has sought a report from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) regarding a scuffle between students’ groups on Ram Navmi (Sunday), officials said on Tuesday.
A senior MoE official said, “As per standard procedures, a formal report has been sought about the clash between the student groups on the occasion of Ram Navmi and the unrest on campus”.
Two groups of students clashed at the JNU’s Kaveri Hostel on Sunday (April 10) allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami in the mess. Police said that 20 students were injured in the clash.
The two groups of students lodged police complaints against each other on Monday, while University authorities claimed that the violence erupted after some students objected to a ‘havan’, an assertion also made by RSS-affiliate Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration also warned students of disciplinary action if they were found indulging in any kind of violence on campus.
Hundreds of Jawaharlal Nehru University students affiliated to the Left-leaning All India Students Association (AISA) staged a protest near the Delhi Police headquarters on Monday and demanded the arrest of ABVP members for their alleged role in the violence in JNU.
