New Delhi, 28th May.
In a historic milestone for India’s democracy, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) witnessed its highest voter turnout in the last 35 years during the General Election 2024. The Union Territory achieved a combined voter turnout (VTR) of 58.46% across its five Lok Sabha constituencies, marking a substantial increase in civic engagement and democratic participation.

The Kashmir Valley saw a remarkable 30-point increase in voter turnout compared to the 2019 elections, with participation rising to 50.86%. This surge reflects the residents’ renewed faith in the democratic process. Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies recorded VTRs of 38.49%, 59.1%, and 54.84%, respectively—the highest in three decades. Udhampur and Jammu constituencies reported 68.27% and 72.22% turnout, respectively.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, commended the efforts of polling personnel and security officials for ensuring peaceful elections. CEC Kumar praised the increased number of candidates, citizen involvement through C-vigil complaints, and the high number of rally requests via the Suvidha Portal, highlighting a significant shift towards active electoral participation.

The high voter turnout is a promising indicator for the upcoming assembly elections in J&K, showcasing the people’s commitment to democracy. Efforts by election and security officials, particularly in engaging the youth, played a crucial role in this democratic resurgence. Notably, the majority of voters were aged 18-59, demonstrating strong support for the electoral process.

The Election Commission also facilitated voting for Kashmiri migrants at designated polling stations in Delhi, Jammu, and Udhampur, ensuring inclusive participation. Ladakh, now a separate Union Territory, recorded a robust 71.82% turnout.

Extensive awareness campaigns, including adventure sports, symposiums, and cultural events, were organized across J&K to promote voting. Innovative activities such as setting up an igloo polling station in Baramulla and a para-scooter event in Kathua highlighted the region’s enthusiasm for the electoral process. Musical programs and rallies further invigorated public participation, resulting in this historic voter turnout.
