New Delhi, 19th Aug: A positive shift appears to be underway in India-China relations, with Beijing assuring India of a resumed supply of fertilizers, rare earth materials, and tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The assurance was given by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his two-day visit to India and a meeting with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar.
During their discussion, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stated that India and China should adopt a clear and constructive approach to relations, based on mutual respect, sensitivity, and mutual interests. He also stressed the importance of de-escalating tensions in the border areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh, where a four-year-long standoff has persisted.
Jaishankar also clarified India’s stance on Taiwan, stating that there has been no change in its position and that India, like the rest of the world, will maintain a diplomatic presence for economic and cultural relations. Both ministers agreed on the need to draw closer to each other due to the current policies of Washington.
The Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed trip to China for the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The visit is being viewed as part of both neighboring countries’ efforts to improve relations, which have been under severe strain since the Galwan Valley conflict in 2020.
