Jaishankar discusses global geopolitics with prominent Russian scholars

WASHINGTON – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday in a post on X after the meeting the Russian scholars said, “Pleased to interact with prominent scholars and think tank representatives of Russia. Discussed India Russia relations, contemporary world geopolitics and India’s viewpoint.”

Jaishankar discussed India-Russia ties and global geopolitics with prominent scholars and think tank representatives of Russia.

He arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening on a three-day official visit to Russia.

Jaishankar’s visit to Russia came after escalating trade tensions between India and the United States over India’s oil purchases from Russia.

US President Donald Trump increased tariffs imposed on Indian goods to 50 per cent, in what is seen as a sign of his frustration over failing to stop the Russia-Ukraine war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his insights about the recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump over the Ukraine conflict.

Modi said India has called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard.

He thanked Putin for the phone call and sharing his perspective on the Alaska meeting.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar co-chaired the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation in Moscow on Wednesday.

The session aimed to deepen bilateral relations, is a key engagement during his 3 day official visit to Russia from August 19 to 21.

He also scheduled to address the India-Russia Business Forum, where both sides will explore avenues to bolster trade and investment ties.

Jaishankar’s visit came at the invitation of Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted the strategic significance of the visit.

“Dr. S. Jaishankar co-chaired the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation scheduled for 20 August 2025,” the MEA said in a statement.

“The visit aims to further strengthen the longstanding and time-tested India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” the statement further said.

Jaishankar will hold bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The meeting marks a continuation of frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Both leaders had met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Foreign Ministers’ meeting on July 15, as well as during the recent BRICS Summit.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Moscow for Foreign Office Consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, underscored the consistent diplomatic momentum between New Delhi and Moscow.

The visit precedes a potential high-level interaction, as Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India at the invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
