Amaravati, 9th July. Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was elected president of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress for life on Saturday (YSRC).
The process was completed on the final day of the YSRC’s two-day plenary, after the party constitution was amended to allow Jagan to be elected president for life.
After leaving the Congress, Jagan founded the YSRC in March 2011. Since then, he has served as the party’s president, with his mother, Vijayamma, serving as honorary president.
Jagan was elected YSRC president for the last time at the party plenary in 2017.
Vijayamma resigned as honorary president on Friday, reportedly due to a family feud, but she said she was leaving the YSRC to support her daughter Sharmila, who is now the leader of the YSR Telangana party in neighbouring Telangana.
The YSRC will now have to seek permission from the Election Commission of India to make Jagan the party’s leader for life.
The YSRC is citing some precedents where specific regional parties in other states were successful in getting the ECI’s approval to elect a president for life rather than every two years.
