Amaravati, 7th May. The Election Commission, on Monday, admonished YSRCP supremo and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu for breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), directing them to “exercise caution during public statements.”
The electoral body acknowledged that both leaders had transgressed the provisions of the MCC by launching derogatory personal attacks against each other during public speeches while campaigning in the southern state over the past several days.
“Therefore, the Commission…strongly censures Jagan Mohan Reddy, president, YSRCP with the direction to exercise caution in his public statements in the future,” stated Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Election Commission, in an order directed to the chief minister.
Kumar issued a similar directive to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo Mr. Naidu. “The Election Commission noted Reddy’s taunts such as ‘habitual offender,’ ‘rogue,’ ‘sadist,’ and others directed at Naidu, including portraying him as a villainous character in some Tollywood movies.” It also acknowledged Naidu’s jibes at Reddy such as ‘venom spewing,’ ‘mayala fakir’ (evil movie character), ‘fake fellow,’ and others.
Furthermore, the Election Commission observed that both leaders did not deny using such words and statements in their responses to the show cause notices, and continued to do so.
Therefore, it instructed Mr. Naidu and Mr. Reddy to exercise caution in their public statements in the future.
Elections for the 175-member Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled for May 13, with the counting of votes slated for June 4.
