Kolkata, 12th Sept: A third-year English student of Jadavpur University was declared dead late Thursday after being found unconscious in a campus pond during a cultural programme.
According to a university official, the student was found in the pond on the campus on Thursday night and was immediately taken to a nearby private medical college, where doctors pronounced her dead. Police suspect drowning as the cause of death, though a post-mortem examination will confirm the exact reason.
Senior university officials and faculty members visited the hospital soon after the incident. The Kolkata Police have initiated a detailed probe and are awaiting forensic and autopsy reports.
The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress, has demanded CCTV footage and questioned why the cultural event was allowed to continue late into the night. TMCP leaders also alleged that alcohol consumption occurs on the university premises.
The incident comes two years after a first-year Bengali honours student died after falling from a hostel balcony following alleged ragging by seniors, an episode that triggered widespread outrage and arrests of several students.
