New Delhi, 10th March: Officer trainees of the 79th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, where she emphasised the importance of direct taxes in supporting national development and inclusive growth.

Addressing the young officers, the President said that direct taxes play a crucial role in financing development, as they provide governments with a stable source of revenue for investment in sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare and social welfare.

She noted that a fair and transparent tax system strengthens equity in society and supports sustainable economic progress.

President Murmu highlighted that the responsibilities of the Indian Revenue Service extend beyond tax collection. She said IRS officers play a vital role in analysing complex financial transactions, tracking illicit financial flows and examining intricate corporate structures.

According to the President, these capabilities make IRS officers key contributors to India’s journey towards the vision of Viksit Bharat.

She urged the trainees to make decisions that are just, efficient and based on a clear understanding of business processes, while maintaining integrity and fairness in their professional duties.

The President also advised the young officers to practise prudence and balance in their conduct and decision-making.

“A prudent officer balances enforcement with facilitation, authority with humility, and technological capability with human sensitivity,” she said.

President Murmu further emphasised that officers should exercise their authority with humility, restraint and a firm commitment to constitutional values.

The trainees of the 79th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IT) are currently undergoing induction training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur.

The batch also includes two officer trainees from the Royal Bhutan Service, reflecting cooperation and knowledge exchange between India and Bhutan in tax administration.
