New Delhi, 17th Nov: Iran has suspended its one-way tourist visa cancellation regime for Indian nationals, ending the visa-free entry facility that had been available under specific conditions. Starting November 22, Indian travellers holding ordinary passports will be required to obtain a valid visa for entering Iran or even transiting through its airports.
Until now, Indian tourists could visit Iran without a visa under certain categories as part of Tehran’s efforts to attract foreign visitors and strengthen ties with Asian countries. The new directive means that all Indian nationals must apply for an Iranian visa in advance, ensure they possess it at the time of boarding, and carry a valid visa even for airport transfers within Iranian territory.
The change is likely to affect Indian travellers who frequented Iran for its cultural and historical attractions, including Isfahan, Shiraz, Qom and Mashhad, as well as its desert landscapes and ancient Silk Road heritage. Iran has also served as an important transit hub for budget-conscious travellers heading to Europe and Central Asia.
With the new rules kicking in, Indian passengers have been advised to check updated visa requirements and plan their travel accordingly.
