Insights into Salaries and Perks of India’s Top Leadership Ahead of Modi’s Swearing-in Ceremony

As the nation awaits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s oath-taking ceremony today at 7:15 pm, it’s opportune to delve into the salaries and perks accorded to India’s top leadership, including the President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister.

President:

In 2018, the salary of the President of India underwent a significant revision, soaring from ₹1.50 lakh per month to ₹5 lakh per month. This augmentation was announced by the former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during his budget speech, marking the first adjustment since January 2006.

Accompanying the elevated salary are a plethora of perks:

  • Complimentary travel across the nation via air, rail, or steamer, with provisions for a companion whose expenses are covered.
  • Access to free medical services and attendance.
  • A furnished rent-free residence, inclusive of two landlines (one dedicated to internet connectivity), a mobile phone, and five personal staff members, with maintenance expenses covered.
  • In the unfortunate event of the President’s demise during office tenure, the surviving spouse is entitled to a family pension equivalent to fifty percent of the retiring President’s pension, along with lifelong access to free medical services.
Vice President:

Simultaneously, the emolument of the Vice President saw a surge from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹4 lakh per month, as announced by Mr. Jaitley.

Perks accompanying the Vice President’s role include:

  • Complimentary accommodation, personal security, medical care, train and air travel, as well as communication services.
  • Following retirement, the Vice President is entitled to a secretarial staff, comprising a Private Secretary, an Additional Private Secretary, a Personal Assistant, and two Peons, with associated maintenance charges covered.

Prime Minister:

The Prime Minister of India reportedly receives a monthly salary of ₹1.66 lakh, complemented by an array of privileges:

  • A dedicated Personal staff from the Special Protection Group (SPG), entrusted with ensuring the PM’s security.
  • Access to Air India One, an exclusive aircraft for official visits.
  • Residence at the esteemed 7, Race Course Road, serving as the official abode.
