Dhanbad, 1st Aug: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday graced the 45th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad. During her address, the President praised the institute’s nearly century-long legacy and its role in national development, urging graduating students to become compassionate and purposeful professionals.

The President noted that IIT (ISM) was established to produce experts in mining and geology but has since expanded to become a leading center for higher education and research in diverse fields. She expressed her happiness that the institute’s academic ecosystem is aligned with the needs and aspirations of the nation’s citizens.

Emphasizing the vital role of the institute, the President said IIT-ISM must not only produce excellent engineers and researchers but also professionals who are “compassionate, sensitive and purposeful.” She highlighted the complex challenges facing the world, such as climate change, digital disruption, and social inequality, and called on IIT-ISM to play a leading role in finding new and sustainable solutions.

Murmu stressed that India’s vast human resources, combined with increasing access to technical education and digital skills, are positioning the country to become a technological superpower. She advised the students to contribute to this by focusing on innovation, practical knowledge, and an interdisciplinary approach to education.

The President concluded by advising the graduates not to limit their knowledge to personal advancement but to use it for the public good. She urged them to help build a “stronger and more just India” and a “Green India” where development is in harmony with nature, adding that their work should reflect “empathy, excellence and ethics” along with intelligence. “Innovation driven by compassion, not just innovation, makes the world better,” she stated.
