Shillong/Indore, 19th June: In a chilling twist to the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, police have revealed that Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of killing her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, made over 200 calls to her lover before and after her wedding. Investigators confirmed on Thursday that the man she frequently contacted under the alias “Sanjay Verma” is in fact Raj Kushwaha — her former lover and co-conspirator in the murder plot.

According to police records, Sonam and “Sanjay” exchanged 239 calls over a 39-day period leading up to and following her May 11 marriage. Authorities believe the alias was used to avoid raising suspicion. Raj, who worked as an accountant in her family’s furniture business, allegedly helped orchestrate the killing.

Sonam’s brother Govind Raghuvanshi, speaking to the media on Wednesday, denied any knowledge of “Sanjay Verma.” “I don’t know anything about Sanjay. I also just learned that his name is now connected to the case,” he said, adding that the family has severed all ties with Sonam.

The murder came to light after the newlyweds, who had travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, went missing on May 23 after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Raja’s body was found on June 2, around 20 km from their last known location, prompting a deeper investigation into what initially appeared to be a missing couple case.

Sonam later surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur on June 8 and surrendered at Nandganj police station. Her arrest followed the detention of three contract killers — Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi — from Uttar Pradesh, Indore, and Sagar. Raj Kushwaha was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Meghalaya Police stated that Sonam confessed to the crime on June 11, admitting that she had hired the trio to eliminate Raja. The murder was allegedly financed with assistance from her cousin, Jitendra Raghuvanshi, who paid the initial amount to the killers.

Govind, expressing shock over the betrayal, extended support to Raja’s grieving family. “We will stand by them in their pursuit of justice,” he said.

The case, involving deceit, a love affair, and a contract killing during what was supposed to be a celebratory honeymoon, has sent shockwaves across the country.
