New Delhi, 2nd Jan: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government over the contamination of drinking water in Indore, saying that “poison was distributed instead of water” while the administration remained asleep.

In a post on X, Gandhi said mourning has spread across households in Indore as poor families struggle to cope with the crisis. He also criticised what he described as arrogant remarks made by BJP leaders, stating that families who lost loved ones deserved compassion, not insensitivity.

The criticism comes after at least 12 people died and more than 200 others were hospitalised following a diarrhoea outbreak linked to contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area. Laboratory tests confirmed that sewage from a newly built public toilet had leaked into the drinking water pipeline.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Indore, met affected patients and chaired a review meeting, assuring that strict action would follow the investigation. Two Public Health Engineering officials have been suspended and one dismissed so far, while a three-member panel has been constituted to probe the incident.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Authorities have also restored water supply with advisories to boil water before consumption.
