New Delhi, 28th Jan: President of India Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday addressed both Houses of Parliament in a joint session, outlining the government’s vision, priorities and achievements as the country enters the second phase of the 21st century and accelerates its journey towards becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
In her address, the President highlighted major national milestones, including the 150 years of Vande Mataram, tributes to Guru Tegh Bahadur, Birsa Munda and Sardar Patel, and said these commemorations inspire the younger generation and strengthen the spirit of national unity.
Emphasising social justice, President Murmu said over 25 crore citizens have come out of poverty in the last decade. She highlighted the expansion of welfare schemes, including pucca housing, piped water under Jal Jeevan Mission, LPG connections under Ujjwala, and large-scale Direct Benefit Transfers to ensure transparency and efficiency.
The President said healthcare coverage has expanded through Ayushman Bharat, with crores of free treatments, expansion of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and disease elimination missions, including Sickle Cell Anaemia and Trachoma eradication.
On economic growth, she said India remains the fastest-growing major economy, with record foodgrain production, rising exports, manufacturing growth, and rapid expansion of mobile, EV and electronics manufacturing. She also highlighted infrastructure achievements, including Vande Bharat trains, metro network expansion, national highways, inland waterways, and landmark projects such as the Chenab Bridge and new Pamban Bridge.
President Murmu underlined advances in space, including India’s growing presence in human spaceflight and future plans for an Indian space station. She also highlighted PRAGATI as a key platform to fast-track projects and welfare delivery.
On reforms, she referred to GST improvements, income tax reforms, new labour codes, and steps to promote ease of doing business. She also stressed green growth, nuclear and renewable energy expansion, rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar, and India’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity.
Addressing internal security, the President said Operation Sindoor showcased India’s defence capabilities and resolve against terrorism, while decisive action against Maoist violence has reduced affected districts significantly.
She also highlighted women-led development, growth of Self-Help Groups, Lakhpati Didi initiative, Namo Drone Didi, and the historic graduation of the first batch of women cadets from the National Defence Academy.
On foreign policy, President Murmu said India continues to play a balancing role globally, strengthen ties with the Global South, and expand its footprint in global platforms such as G20, BRICS, SCO and BIMSTEC.
Concluding her address, the President called upon Members of Parliament to rise above differences on matters of national interest and work collectively towards the shared goal of Viksit Bharat, reaffirming faith in India’s constitutional values, unity and long-term development vision.
