Morena, 18th Feb: Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday announced the birth of three cheetah cubs at Kuno National Park, marking another milestone under Project Cheetah.
In a post on X, the minister said the cubs were born to Gamini, a South African cheetah and a second-time mother. The birth coincides with the completion of three years since the arrival of cheetahs from South Africa in India.
With the latest litter, the number of surviving India-born cheetah cubs has increased to 27, while the total cheetah population in the country has reached 38.
Yadav said this is the ninth successful cheetah litter recorded on Indian soil and each such birth strengthens Project Cheetah, reflecting the dedication of field staff and veterinary teams involved in the programme.
Calling it a moment of pride for Kuno and the country, the minister expressed hope that the cubs would grow strong and carry forward India’s cheetah revival story.
Project Cheetah, the world’s first intercontinental translocation of a large carnivore, saw the arrival of 20 cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa in 2022 and 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released the first eight cheetahs into the wild on September 17, 2022.
