New York 24th January :Four members of an Indian-origin family were shot dead during an alleged domestic dispute in the US state of Georgia early Friday, sending shockwaves through the Indian community and prompting a response from Indian diplomatic officials. The accused, identified as Vijay Kumar (51), has been arrested and faces multiple serious criminal charges, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred around 2:30 am local time at a residence on Brook Ivy Court in Lawrenceville, located in Gwinnett County. Police responding to a distress call found the bodies of four adults inside the home, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

The victims were identified as Meemu Dogra (43), Kumar’s wife, Gourav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37), and Harish Chander (38). Officials believe the shooting followed a heated argument within the family, though investigators say the precise motive remains under investigation.

Three children were present in the house when the shooting began. In a chilling account shared by police, the children reportedly hid inside a closet to protect themselves. One of the children managed to call 911, providing crucial details that enabled law enforcement officers to reach the scene within minutes. Authorities confirmed that the children were not physically harmed and have since been placed in the care of a family member.

The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed deep grief over the tragedy and confirmed that one of the victims was an Indian national. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the consulate said it was extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family and was in contact with local authorities.

“We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family,” the consulate said.

According to police records, Vijay Kumar has been charged with four counts each of aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder, along with cruelty to children charges—one count in the first degree and two counts in the third degree.

The case has once again drawn attention to the issue of domestic violence involving firearms in the United States, particularly within immigrant households facing personal, financial, or emotional stress. Community leaders in Georgia have expressed condolences and called for greater awareness and support systems for families in distress.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details regarding court proceedings or possible prior complaints linked to the family.
