WASHINGTON – Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in China’s Tianjin on Saturday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, MEA said in a press release.
Modi was accorded a red carpet welcome by senior Chinese officials.
He was welcomed with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” by the Indian diaspora, along with classical music and dance performances. Chinese artists played Indian instruments such as the sitar, santoor, and tabla.
Modi posted on X “Landed in Tianjin China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and interactions with world leaders.”
He is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The 25th meeting of the Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be held on August 31 and September 1, 2025, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with several other world leaders on the sidelines of SCO.
India has been a member of SCO since 2017. It held the presidency of the Council of Heads of State of SCO during 2022-23.
Both countries have undertaken several measures to recalibrate their ties, which had been severely strained after the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.
PM visited China in June 2018 to attend the SCO Summit, while Chinese President Xi Jinping travelled to India in October 2019 for the second “informal summit.”
