New Delhi, 15th Jan. President Droupadi Murmu on Monday praised the Indian Army for its crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s security and contributing to its peace and prosperity during the 77th Army Day celebrations.
In her address, the President commended the Army for its dedication, stating that the forces have created a secure and peaceful environment for the nation. “The courageous army personnel have consistently displayed extraordinary courage and high standards of professionalism in defending our borders,” President Murmu said in her statement.
Army Day, observed annually on January 15, marks the foundation of the Indian Army and symbolizes India’s military independence. It commemorates the historic moment in 1949 when General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Army Chief of India, handed over command to Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, the first Indian Chief Commander.
This year’s Army Day theme, “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena,” highlights India’s strong and capable army. In her message, President Murmu paid tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation, acknowledging their sacrifice and that of their families. “A grateful nation pays tribute to the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives in service of the nation. The nation is indebted to them,” she added.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his admiration for the Indian Army, describing it as a symbol of pride and confidence for every Indian. He recognized its unparalleled role in national security, peacekeeping, and humanitarian assistance. “The Indian Army is a key pillar of national security, and its contributions in disaster management, peacekeeping, and maintaining India’s integrity are commendable,” he stated.
The Defence Minister also underscored the Army’s commitment to modernisation and indigenisation, further strengthening India’s emergence as a “Viksit Bharat.” He extended his heartfelt greetings to the soldiers, veterans, and their families, celebrating the courage and discipline of the Indian Army, which continues to bring glory to India on the global stage.
