New Delhi/Lausanne, 14th Feb: In a major development for Indian boxing, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has been granted full membership of the International Boxing Association (IBA), marking a key milestone for the sport in the country.
The decision was taken by the IBA Board of Directors on February 6, 2026, and formally communicated through a letter issued from Lausanne, Switzerland, on February 9.
IBA President Umar Kremlev congratulated IABF President Dr Rakesh Mishra, stating that the recognition was granted in view of the federation’s commitment to the sport, transparent functioning, and adherence to international standards.
Welcoming the IABF into the IBA family, Kremlev expressed confidence that India’s active participation would bring fresh momentum to the global development of boxing.

The IBA has also formally invited the Indian federation to participate in upcoming international events and competitions, expressing hope that the inclusion of Indian boxers would further energise the global boxing community.
With full membership, the IABF is expected to gain greater rights, opportunities, and international recognition. The move is likely to open new avenues for Indian boxers, including participation in global tournaments, advanced training, technical support, and international exposure.
Dr Rakesh Mishra described the development as the beginning of a new chapter in Indian boxing. He thanked the IBA Board and member nations, and said the membership would help create more opportunities for Indian boxers at international events, including the Olympics.

He said the federation would now focus on identifying talent at the grassroots level and providing structured training to prepare competitive athletes for upcoming Olympic Games, while also working to improve the overall condition of boxing in the country.
IABF General Secretary Rakesh Thakaran congratulated state-level boxing associations, calling the achievement a result of collective efforts. He said the federation would work in a coordinated and committed manner under the guidance of the Union Sports Ministry to ensure greater international opportunities and overall development of the sport in India.
