India Remembers Sacrifice of Parliament Attack Martyrs

Top leaders pay tributes, reaffirm India’s firm resolve against terrorism

New Delhi, 13th Dec: India on Saturday observed the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament, with the Vice President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries paying tributes to the martyrs at the Parliament House Complex.

Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament and other dignitaries offered floral tributes. Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha P. C. Mody and family members of the martyrs were also present.

Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in a message shared on X, said the nation remains resolute in its fight against terrorism. He stated that India’s commitment to protecting its unity, integrity, security and sovereignty is not a mere formality but a clear message that the country will never bow down to any terrorist intent.

Paying homage to the fallen heroes, the Speaker said their courage and sacrifice while defending the supreme institution of democracy would continue to inspire future generations. He added that the valour displayed by the security personnel symbolised India’s indomitable will and unwavering faith in democratic values.

The nation recalled that on December 13, 2001, Jagdish Prasad Yadav and Matbar Singh Negi, Security Assistants of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat; Kamlesh Kumari, Constable, Central Reserve Police Force; Nanak Chand and Rampal, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Delhi Police; Om Prakash, Bijender Singh and Ghanshyam, Head Constables, Delhi Police; and Deshraj, Gardener, Central Public Works Department, attained martyrdom while thwarting the terrorist attack on Parliament.

In recognition of their exemplary bravery, Sarvashri Jagdish Prasad Yadav, Matbar Singh Negi and Smt. Kamlesh Kumari were posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, while Sarvashri Nanak Chand, Rampal, Om Prakash, Bijender Singh and Ghanshyam were posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
