New Delhi, 30th Sept: India has been re-elected to the Part II category of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council with a stronger mandate, securing more votes than in the 2022 elections. The voting took place on September 27 during the 42nd ICAO Assembly Session in Montreal.
Part II of the Council comprises states that make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation. India’s improved performance reflects the growing confidence of ICAO Member States in its leadership and commitment to global civil aviation.
A founding member of ICAO since 1944, India has maintained an uninterrupted presence on the Council for 81 years. For the 2025–2028 term, India has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen aviation safety, security, sustainability, equitable air connectivity, and ICAO’s “No Country Left Behind” initiative.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, who campaigned in Montreal, also held bilateral meetings with other Member States and engaged with global aviation stakeholders. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Civil Aviation hosted a reception for Ambassadors and High Commissioners in New Delhi, while the Ministry of External Affairs extended diplomatic outreach to bolster India’s candidature.
As one of the fastest-growing aviation markets, India has drawn significant global interest in aircraft component manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and aviation skill development.
The ICAO Council, elected every three years by the 193 Member States of the Chicago Convention, serves as the organization’s governing body. India’s re-election consolidates its role as a pivotal player in shaping global aviation standards and advancing sustainable air transport.
